Until now, using your PS5 controller on different devices—PlayStation 5, PC, Mac, iPhone, or Apple TV—required a new Bluetooth connection procedure each time. The result: a waste of time and a user experience that's a million miles away from what other manufacturers like Microsoft or 8BitDo offer, which have already been integrating multi-pairing for several years.
Sony has long dragged its feet on this issue, despite user requests. But things are finally about to change, as the upcoming system update announced for late 2025 will allow the DualSense, and its high-end DualSense Edge version, to memorize multiple connection profiles, making switching from one device to another almost instantaneous.
A purely software-based unlock
Good news: no new controller will be required. The functionality will leverage capabilities already present in current hardware, including the controller's Bluetooth 5.1 compatibility. This is therefore a simple software unlock, which will require a firmware update for the PS5 controller and console, as well as compatibility with third-party devices (PC, smartphones, Apple TV, etc.).
The recent arrival of the PlayStation Accessories app on Windows and macOS had already paved the way, allowing for more precise management of the controller's settings on other platforms. With this next development, Sony is finally completing the picture.
And this change is not insignificant: it also reflects a desire to better integrate the PS5 controller into a broader ecosystem, at a time when cross-platform gaming, cloud gaming, and mobility are becoming increasingly important. As Apple and Sony have strengthened their partnership, with increased compatibility of DualSense controllers on iOS and Apple TV products, this update comes at the right time.
It will also allow the DualSense to better compete with Xbox controllers, long perceived as more versatile for PC or mobile gamers.
A game-changing update
By finally offering multi-device management worthy of the name, Sony is correcting one of the main flaws of its controller, which has been praised for its ergonomics and advanced features. While the exact date has not yet been announced, everything suggests that the update could coincide with the holiday season or the launch of new cloud gaming services. For mobile gamers or those who alternate between console and PC, this small change could make a big difference.
