Waiting for the Xbox Portable? Bad news has arrived

There's been a lot of movement at Microsoft lately. On the one hand, exclusives are gradually leaving their home ecosystem to venture into PlayStation territory. Forza Horizon 5, Indiana Jones, Hellblade 2... they're all being exported one by one. On the other hand, plans for the future have reportedly changed in terms of hardware. More specifically, this concerns the famous “Xbox Portable project.

Microsoft revises its priorities for the Xbox Portable

Microsoft makes no secret of its ambition to break down barriers within its console ecosystem. The Xbox brand is no longer limited to a single platform, no longer hesitating to deposit its first-party licenses in the competition's catalog. But, in addition to this, the manufacturer is looking to open the game to all possible platforms. This is why an Xbox Portable project is reportedly in the works.

In fact, Phil Spencer himself had revealed that a new device would be released in the coming years. However, he was not yet certain of the form it would take. However, bad news will surprise those waiting for it. It seems that the decision is not coming anytime soon. According to the latest information from Windows Central, plans for the “Xbox Portable” have been halted, at least temporarily.

Microsoft is reportedly looking to put this Xbox Portable aside for the time being to focus its efforts elsewhere as a priority. According to journalist Jez Corden, the company would first like to further optimize Windows 11 on portable devices designed with third-party partners. Among the collaborations targeted, there would be a certain "Kennan" project, the machine that was recently leaked as probably being the Asus ROG Ally 2.

In short, with the Kennan project nearing the end of its design, Microsoft would be working hard to finish its optimization. Therefore, it seems more relevant for the company to complete its work on this collaboration with Asus, while continuing its tests in terms of cloud gaming. Then, it will resume the internal work of this Xbox Portable which arouses the curiosity of specialists.

Given the place that the competition is taking on the market, starting with the SteamDeck and certainly the future Nintendo Switch 2, Microsoft does not want to miss its nomadic turn. Especially since Sony is also reportedly investing on its side for a potential "PS6 Portable". On the other hand, there is therefore no question for the company of missing out with the Xbox Portable.
