Scouting at the merchants!

A few days before the start of the sales, it's time to do your scouting on your favorite e-commerce sites. To do this, make a list of products that interest you and note their current prices. Indeed, during sales, sellers must imperatively indicate the discount offered compared to an actual reference price, and they are not allowed to increase the price of a product before the sales period. So, when the sales start, you'll be able to quickly find out if the discounts are really interesting, and choose the best offer.

Outside of legal sales periods, retailers can organize commercial operations to clear their stocks, provided they don't use the word "sales" and they don't sell at a loss.

Define your budget

To go to the sales without wasting time, it's important to know your budget limits. This will allow you to avoid purely impulse purchases, but sometimes it's complicated! If you know what you want, you can easily estimate the amount you can spend. All you have to do is set a limit that you don't want to exceed, find the best prices, and maybe you can make a few extras.

What is the difference between sales and other discounts?

Sales are the only promotional periods during which retailers are allowed to sell their stock at a loss. They meet 3 characteristics:

  • They are accompanied or preceded by advertising.
  • They include an announcement of a price reduction (which can go as far as a resale at a loss) within the limit of the stock to be sold.
  • They are practiced during fixed periods of 4 weeks (summer and winter sales) whose dates are set by the Commercial Code.

Beware of traps

During sales, retailers must clearly distinguish between products on sale and those that are not. Products on sale must have been offered for sale and paid for at least 1 month before the start of the sales. Indeed, retailers are not allowed to bring in products specifically for the sales! Please also note that warranty limitations on sale items are prohibited, since the warranties are similar to those for non-sale products.

Whether the item is purchased on sale or not, the consumer can return the product to the seller for exchange or refund, without penalty, within 14 days of delivery.

Sales at various e-retailers

As with every sale period, the brands, whether physical or online, will offer their best deals and discounts.
