Windows 11: Microsoft opens Xbox app to Steam games and other stores

The Xbox app is no longer limited to games from the Microsoft Store or Game Pass. Starting today, the app also centralizes games purchased on Steam and Battle.net, transforming it into a multi-platform launcher. Eventually, other stores will strengthen the app's ranks, such as the Epic Games Store and GOG.

PC games brought together in the Xbox app

Compatible stores will appear in the app's "My Library" tab, along with the list of the most recent games. Microsoft promises that there's nothing special to do; everything is automatic: games from the Steam library will simply be displayed in Xbox. No more juggling between launchers! The Xbox app settings allow you to hide unwanted stores.

Microsoft is offering anyone who wants to get their hands dirty the opportunity to install the Xbox Insider Hub, which allows you to test new Xbox services and features on Windows. The feature will be enabled in the upcoming ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X consoles scheduled for release later this year, likely in October. But PCs running Windows 11—not just handheld consoles—will also be able to benefit from it, starting today, in fact, with this preview.

This is another piece of the puzzle that Microsoft is putting in place to transform Xbox into the gateway to all its games, whether purchased from the Microsoft Store or elsewhere. Windows will also take a prominent place within the Xbox platform, as Sarah Bond, president of Xbox, announced last week. Future Xbox consoles are expected to run on the operating system.
