With the Baristina Variety, Philips wants to kill capsule machines

A year after launching the first Baristina, Philips is back in the spotlight with the Baristina Variety, which shares the strengths of its predecessor while adding a key feature: a dual bean hopper system called Bean Swap. It was a no-brainer, as the machine now offers two compartments of 115 grams each, selectable via a dial. This innovation allows the user to easily switch between different coffee profiles according to their current preferences, without having to completely empty the bean hopper.

This flexibility responds to a strong market trend. According to Philips, 82% of capsule machine users consume several types of coffee every day. By offering a solid alternative to traditional capsule machines, without compromising on the ease of use that made the Baristina a success, this new model hopes to overtake the competition.

Two reserves for twice the choice

The strength of the Baristina Variety lies in its price positioning. Priced at less than €350, it clearly stands out from other dual-container machines, which are often larger and much more expensive. Philips intends to democratize access to a technology previously reserved for high-end models, while maintaining a compact format suitable for home use and a reasonable price.

The machine retains the features that made the first Baristina a success: a sleek design, an intuitive interface, and the ability to make espresso, lungo, or extra-strong coffees, with two strength levels. The process is fully automated, from grinding to extraction under 16 bars of pressure.

On the other hand, traditional players like Delonghi and Krups are also multiplying innovations, while new entrants such as Xiaomi and Ninja are trying to shake up the sector with compact and connected machines. The competition is intensifying, but Philips could well strike a blow to capsule machines, by offering the best of loose beans, without compromising on choice.

Price and availability

Announced last week, the Philips Baristina Variety coffee machine will be on sale during the month of August, for less than €350.
