Sony is going to make some people happy. Yesterday, while gamers were more focused on the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, the company rolled out a system update for its PS5. While it went unnoticed by some, others noticed a major change. Indeed, a long-standing issue has just been resolved on the console.
For about three years, some players have noticed a visual optimization issue when the variable refresh rate is enabled. An aspect that seems to have been resolved with the latest version of the system, as Sony directly confirmed to us. In a post on its networks, Digital Foundry explains:
What was the problem?
The problem with VRR on PS5 consisted of an annoying bug that caused stuttering in certain games, even when these games used the technology that was supposed to prevent it. VRR is normally used to synchronize the screen refresh rate with the game's frame rate, ensuring a smooth, tear-free image in real time.
The problem appeared mainly in games running at intermediate frequencies (between 70 and 90 frames per second), i.e., neither stable at 60 nor at 120 fps. As a result, instead of being smoother, the experience became choppy, with noticeable slowdowns, sometimes after only a few minutes of play.
Titles like The Last of Us Part II, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and Elden Ring were affected, although not all of them offered a 120 Hz mode. The recent PS5 update quietly fixed this bug, finally bringing VRR performance in line with that of the Xbox Series, where the feature has long been more stable.
Obviously, not all gamers are affected. You need to have a TV compatible with such technologies to take advantage of them. Your screen's refresh rate is the key to the whole problem. If yours is capped at 60fps, then there's little chance you noticed the issue at first.
