Xbox Portable: You can apparently forget about the “real” portable console

During its Xbox Games Showcase 2025, the manufacturer gave a short world preview of the ROG Xbox Ally. A portable console-PC running Windows 11 in the colors of the green brand with a dedicated Game Bar button, the specific keys of the controllers we know, and the inclusion of elements like Play Anywhere to play your games on all platforms with a single copy. It's the first Xbox Portable unveiled to the general public and perhaps the only one...

Microsoft's Xbox Portable project aborted for good?

It had leaked before time, but it's official since the Summer Game Fest 2025, the ROG Xbox Ally does exist and comes in two versions. "In collaboration with Xbox, we have created a smoother and more intuitive interface. Now, when you turn on your ROG Xbox Ally, you'll be taken straight to the full-screen Xbox experience - a console-inspired user interface optimized for joystick and button controls," Asus announced about this Xbox Portable.

But as you may have read in our columns, a persistent rumor has it that an Xbox Portable will be designed entirely in-house, like home consoles. Except that you can apparently forget about this "true" portable console, because bad news has arrived. It's not official yet, but it comes from journalist Tom Warren of The Verge who is rather aware of Microsoft's plans. " According to inside sources, it's essentially canceled [the Xbox Portable by Microsoft]. The company is focusing on the next next-gen Xbox console."

This rumor of Microsoft canceling the Xbox Portable has already been heard over at Windows Central. At the time, journalist Jez Corden suggested that this project, codenamed "Kennan," might have been abandoned due to the desire to "further optimize Windows 11 on portable devices designed with third-party partners." And perhaps to test the potential success of an Xbox Portable by partnering with a manufacturer that already has a good grasp of the subject? Perhaps that will remain a mystery... What do you think of the ROG Xbox Ally reveal?
