Google is adding a new feature to YouTube Shorts that allows you to identify what you're seeing on screen. A simple tap lets you find the name of a monument, the brand of clothing, or translate a poster.
Short videos have invaded smartphones, but they often scroll too quickly for us to be able to identify everything. Spotting an object, a monument, or a text in a Short was a real headache until now. You had to pause the video, take a screenshot, and then use Google Lens to get information. Google now offers a much simpler solution, directly integrated into the YouTube app. Since last year, Google Lens has been able to answer questions based on an image or photo, thanks to artificial intelligence. It can recognize objects, translate text, or provide information about a location. This technology is now coming to YouTube Shorts videos. The rollout begins this week on mobile apps, and will be available to everyone in the next few days.
Google Lens integrates into Shorts to recognize objects, places, or text with a tap
Once the feature is available, here's how to use it on mobile:
- Open the YouTube app
- Go to the Shorts tab or open one from the home page
- Tap the screen to pause the video
- Select Lens at the top of the screen
- Draw, tap, or highlight the item you want to search for
- Tap the Translate icon if there is text to translate
- Close the results with the X button or by swiping down
- The results are displayed directly on the video, with images or useful links.
During the launch phase, there will be no ads or product links in the results. Shorts containing commercial links or promotions are not compatible with this feature for now. But this new feature already transforms videos into visual exploration tools. For example, if someone is wearing a pair of sneakers you like in a video, you can tap them on the screen to launch a search and discover the brand, similar models or even where to buy them. With a simple gesture, it becomes possible to learn more without leaving what you are watching.
