The YouTube Premium Lite subscription allowed you to remove ads when watching videos in Shorts format, this will soon no longer be the case.
It's already starting. Just a few months after introducing the YouTube Premium Lite offer, the platform is announcing to its users that it will start displaying ads on more content, even though the whole point of the offer is precisely to no longer see ads. According to the German media Deskmodder, YouTube will display ads on Shorts starting June 30, 2025. Until now, only music videos and search results were affected.
The price of YouTube Premium Lite remains fixed at €5.99 per month. This offer will therefore now only allow for the removal of ads on traditional videos, since short formats filmed vertically will soon no longer be spared. All other benefits included with YouTube Premium, such as background playback, offline mode, or 1080p with higher bitrates, are not available with the Lite plan.
YouTube Premium Lite no longer blocks ads for Shorts
YouTube Premium Lite is currently available in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Great Britain, India, Italy, Mexico, Thailand, and the United States. When the subscription arrives in France or if you subscribe by a roundabout way via another country, you have been warned.
Here are the steps to follow to cancel your subscription:
- Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships.
- Click on Manage Subscription.
- Click on Deactivate.
- Click on Continue to cancel.
- Select the reason why you want to cancel your subscription, then click on Next.
- Click on Yes, cancel.
If you want to upgrade from YouTube Premium Lite to YouTube Premium, the procedure is as follows:
- Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships.
- Click Learn More under “Premium”.
- Select Get YouTube Premium.
- Select your new Premium subscription.
- Click Confirm.
In the US, YouTube Premium Lite subscribers have been able to see ads while watching Shorts since the offer launched in March. For other markets, this will be a welcome change.
