In January 2025, it was a cold shower. Tesla sold only 1,141 of its cars during the month, down 63.4% compared to January 2024. The decline, which is confirmed elsewhere in Europe, such as in Spain with only 269 registrations, or 75.4% less than a year ago, or in Sweden, with 394 cars sold, down 46%.
Is Elon Musk the main culprit? Reuters referred to a study by Novus, in which the Swedes' positive opinion of Tesla had decreased by 11% since Donald Trump's inauguration. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been focusing on his new role in government for the past two months, and his new tendency to want to bring down the left and progressives.
Transition period with the Model Y
While the brand's image has certainly been damaged, it is also worth mentioning the brand's transition period, regarding its best-selling model in Europe, the Model Y. The latter has recently undergone a facelift, and it is clear that many customers are delaying their purchase to take advantage of the new electric SUV. In November and December, this was not necessarily the case, when Tesla offered attractive discounts and financing offers to buy its old Model Y.
Tesla quickly understood that its updates to the Model Y would have to be implemented quickly. This is why the company delivered a demonstration model two weeks ago in Paris so that the press and customers could discover the new lines in real life, and the work for a more refined interior.
On the other hand, the drop in Tesla sales in France in January 2025 also introduces a new era where the American manufacturer will not be able to benefit from such advantageous ecological bonuses as in the past, and will have to share the cake with more and more competitors. After the Chinese, it is the turn of the Europeans to enter the scene, with Renault in the lead, which recently won the Car of the Year award with its new R5 E-Tech.
