On January 29, roguelite fans were treated to a particularly anticipated new game. It's Cryptical Path, a title from the studio Old Skull Games in which the player can shape the dungeon as they wish. If you've had the opportunity to play it, you already know that it's a game that requires a sense of reflection and optimization, as well as some combat skills. Not as demanding as Hades can be, it has its share of small difficulties. Here are our tips to help you get through it a little more easily.
Pay attention to the number of enemies in each room
This is information that often falls by the wayside when you enter a room, but which is nevertheless essential. In Cryptical Path, most rooms contain enemies, common or elite, that must be eliminated before you can collect the reward associated with the environment. To help you in your endeavor, the game tells you how many enemies you have left to kill to completely clear the room… and thus deactivate the traps.
In a few hours of play, we sometimes got caught out by the last opponent in the room – often a small flame from the furnace – hiding in a corner and preventing us from moving forward smoothly. To avoid walking on spiked grids or flamethrowers thinking you've eliminated everyone, be sure to check the number of enemies remaining.
Optimize your treatment rooms
There's one detail that took us a while to notice and that changed the game once we optimized it. In Cryptical Path, you have the possibility to install healing rooms at any time during your run. While their location is generally chosen based on the number of enemies you face beforehand, you must also take into account another extremely important factor.
The more your room is surrounded by other rooms, the more life it will give you. Thus, a healing room surrounded by the top, bottom and both sides gives you up to 4 hearts maximum. You must absolutely take this into account to obtain as much life as possible before fighting the boss.
Optimize your movements
The map of Cryptical Path gives you at the start of each run certain predefined squares, obstacles to bypass, and a selection of rooms that you can arrange as you see fit. Over time, we have realized that decisions taken lightly tend to slow down, or even prevent, our progress.
We can therefore only advise you to take your time and think about each block that you wish to place. Therefore, rooms that contain two blocks at once are interesting, because they often allow you to make connections between several separate islands in a single purchase.
Collect more resources
To progress faster and gain ease, we recommend that you focus on collectible resources. If you come across items that allow you to collect more coins or more crystals to unlock additional rooms, don't hesitate to take them. These items will allow you to have greater control over the environment, and therefore over your enemies. Control is the key to success in Cryptical Path since its gameplay is based precisely on the freedom of choices that players can make.
Don't be afraid of failure
We'll end with a piece of advice that can be applied to all games, but especially to Cryptical Path: don't be afraid of failure. You have many ways to approach the difficulties in the game and it is extremely rare to die before reaching the boss. Cleverly placed rooms and pirouettes in the management of your resources are enough to save your ass in most cases.
Also, every failure is an opportunity to improve yourself. Despite being a roguelite, Cryptical Path is not punishing in the slightest, and you often land on your feet even when the situation seems rather critical. The difficulty level increases over time, but there is nothing insurmountable.
