Google Maps abandons its false good idea for centering the interface

Google Maps abandons its false good idea for centering the interface

This is a minor change to the centering of Google Maps on Android Auto, but unlike the one that makes it easier to identify the right lane, it has greatly upset some users. The company seems to have heard the complaints of some disgruntled people; it has put it into reverse gear.

When a window hides the road

The can of worms was discovered about ten days ago. It had been put there by a Google Maps update that centered the user's position on the vehicle's screen. With the effect of hampering visibility, especially on small screens.

On Reddit, a certain steelbreeze9 wrote: "The street we were driving on was slightly aligned to the right, but it is now centered for me and a large part of the street is covered by the menu of suggested destinations." He illustrated his point with the photograph that serves as the cover of this article.

A certain DaiaBu added his own testimony, again with supporting images.

As reported above, the screen diagonal did have an impact: "I think it depends on the screen size and how the car manufacturer has integrated Android Automotive […]. My central screen is 26 cm and the change made no difference", retorted Disastrous-Egg8923.

Google backtracks

In any case, this incident is heading towards a happy ending. SteelBreeze9 announced the good news: "This morning I noticed that Google Maps is aligned to the left again, instead of being centered like a few days ago."

Alas, for DaiaBu, the other member of this couple of circumstance, the evil has not yet dissipated in him: "I just to check mine and it’s still centered, as per the update a few weeks ago. If they’ve reversed it again, I’m going to be furious – this will be the second time they’ve fixed this glitch, only to reinstate it shortly after.”

Our colleague at 9to5Google, who reported on the sordid affair, believes that “Google is currently rolling out the fix, as not all users have it yet.” So it may only be a matter of hours before DaiaBu regains his peace of mind. Let’s just hope he wasn’t also one of the tourists sent 100 miles from their destination due to a Google Maps error!
