Google Maps is getting closer to Waze with a new personalization option

Google Maps is getting closer to Waze with a new personalization option

Google continues to improve the user experience on Maps with a feature already present on Waze: the customization of the navigation icon. Until now, users could choose from four vehicle models. Now, a new selection of more detailed and colorful icons, already seen last December, is being rolled out on Android.

More varied navigation icons for Google Maps

Until now, Google Maps allowed to customize the navigation icon with a choice limited to four models: an arrow in a white circle, a red sedan, a yellow SUV and a green pickup. With this new update, the app offers five new, more detailed models: a luxury sedan, an off-road pickup, an SUV, a sports car, and a city car.

The customization option doesn't stop at the type of vehicle. Users can now choose from eight colors: white, black, gray, red, blue, yellow, green, and magenta. The old models remain available for those who prefer more classic options.

iOS already served, Android in a second phase

This feature is currently being tested with the beta version 25.06.x of Google Maps on Android. For users who have access to it, a notification in the form of a card titled "Your journey, your way" offers to try the customization. It is also possible to change the icon by accessing the "Journey options" in the application.

For now, this new feature is not yet available on the stable version of Google Maps for Android, but it is already accessible on iOS. It remains to be seen when Google will roll out this to all Android devices.
