New MacBook Air very soon, the MacBook Pro a little later this year

If you’ve been eyeing a MacBook Air, it’s prudent to wait a few more weeks. Apple is likely to update its best-selling lineup in March, “at the latest,” Mark Gurman wrote in his newsletter. The current 13- and 15-inch models, equipped with an M3 chip, were released in March 2024.

The M5 chip first in the MacBook Pro

As a result, the new models should be equipped with an M4 chip, joining the rest of the Mac family (with only the Mac Studio and Mac Pro left to refresh). Apple itself had inadvertently confirmed the existence of these computers, by leaving bits of code lying around in a beta of macOS 15.2.

This launch was more or less supposed to be organized during a spring event, featuring the iPhone SE 4th generation. An agenda that Apple may have wanted to shake up by accelerating the presentation of the future “affordable” smartphone this Wednesday.

In the MacBook Pro department, we can also expect changes under the hood this year. The Bloomberg snoop thus mentions a launch of models with M5 this fall — the current Pro laptops equipped with M4 were unveiled in October 2024.

Last year, however, the iPad Pro had the honor of inaugurating the M4 chip as early as May 2024. A priori therefore, the future M5 tablets will be released after the MacBook Pro. Just before the M5 laptops, the manufacturer should also update the Mac Pro and Mac Studio, stuck with M2 chips — these desktop Macs would receive M4. Possibly at WWDC, in June.
