Kia EV4: an electric sedan with a unique style to tame the Tesla Model 3

Kia EV4: an electric sedan with a unique style to tame the Tesla Model 3

Very focused on SUVs until now, the Korean manufacturer is finally moving down the sedan route. Kia has unveiled the first images of its EV4, an electric car with a very assertive style that has the difficult task of positioning itself against the Tesla Model 3. The official announcement in due form will take place on February 27, at the same time as a probable van concept (PV5?), and, if the rumor is true, a city car, the EV2. That's when we'll have the detailed technical sheet of this atypical sedan.

For now, we'll have to make do with the first photos and it's clear that there's already a lot to say. The first is that there won't be one but two versions of the EV4 and that the two will differ greatly if you look at them from the back. In fact, the sedan will be available in a "classic" version, called Saloon, and another "hatchback" type which takes up certain aesthetic codes of compacts. Because for the rest, the design of these two iterations of the EV4 does not resemble anything known except the concept from which they come.

Of course, we find here and there aesthetic elements seen on the EV6 or the EV9 (less on the EV3 by the way), but they are relatively discreet and struggle to hide the rather original proportions of the saloon. But it is obviously the plunging bonnet on the large grille surrounded by a crescent-shaped optical signature that catches the eye. This then extends to the sharp sides and ends on the rear face. This is where the experience can vary.

The saloon version would almost look like a compact saloon or an estate and we can guess a classic, family use. The "hatchback" version is diving back in like a traditional sedan and should in fact offer a better Cx and therefore a better autonomy.

On the technical side, the secret is still well kept, especially on the capacity of the batteries. It seems clear that the EV4 will be based on the Hyundai/Kia group’s e-GMP platform and that some of its specifications will be quite similar to the excellent Ioniq 6. This information, as well as that concerning its engines and its price, should be revealed on February 27, at the launch of the EV4. Only then will we have an idea of the real capabilities of Kia’s sedan to fight against the Model 3.
