It's an image that says "don't forget me, I'm late, but I'm still here". At Volkswagen, the electric car for less than 20,000 euros will arrive in at least two years, and after an ID.2 planned for next year, at a price between 20,000 and 25,000 euros. Next March, the German brand plans to unveil a concept of its cheapest electric car, to show that its teams are working hard on the project, even if it is not going to be realized right away.
However, Volkswagen could have launched its car earlier, by partnering with Renault. The talks had never led to a concrete project. With this opportunity, the launch date of the electric city car could have been brought forward by several months. A crucial acceleration at a time when Chinese brands are particularly competitive, and the city car market remains dominated by cheaper thermal models, such as Dacia with the Sandero, number 1 in sales in Europe last year.
Volkswagen versus Renault and Citroën
If Volkswagen had partnered with Renault, then the German brand would have developed its new electric car for less than 20,000 euros based on the future Twingo, which will arrive next year. A year ahead of Volkswagen, the diamond brand already has a concept and illustrations from all angles of the city car, including its interior recently. A neo-retro style, like with the R5 and the R4 E-Tech, which Volkswagen intends to draw inspiration from, because its future electric models should also be inspired by the lines of yesteryear to justify a more simplistic design.
Citroën should also arrive on the electric market with a car with a neo-retro style. And it would be a well-known model: the Citroën 2 CV. On the other hand, we would have to wait until 2028 to discover such a car, the year in which the iconic model would celebrate its 80th anniversary. It could be based on an ë-C3 chassis, already shared by Fiat and its Grande Panda. Its price would be positioned between a Citroën Ami (7,990 euros) and an ë-C3 (23,300 euros).
