Windows 11 is about to integrate its own version of "Handoff". The Redmond firm has just unveiled, in the latest Canary build of Windows 11, a continuity function very similar to the one offered by Apple on macOS and iOS. That said, it would be limited to documents created in OneDrive.
The arrival of a continuity function in Windows 11 is not very surprising. Microsoft has in fact been working on this solution for many months. Last summer, leaker Phantomofearth had indeed discovered the existence of this continuity function, hidden in an insider build of Windows 11. The module was then identified under the name "Continue from the phone".
Resume OneDrive documents where you left off
Concretely, if you start working on a OneDrive document from your iPhone or Android smartphone, a notification will automatically appear on Windows 11 as soon as you arrive in front of your PC. Be careful, however, Microsoft specifies that the system will only work if you have "last viewed or modified a OneDrive file on your phone within 5 minutes before unlocking your PC".
A click on this notification will then be enough to open said document on your computer, in your default web browser. Microsoft specifies that the feature will only be available if you sign in to OneDrive with a Microsoft account and that work and school accounts are not supported.
Furthermore, the continuity feature currently only works with Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, your OneNote notes, and PDF files.
For this continuity to be set up, the file must also be open on your smartphone when your PC is locked. Also, the notification that allows you to resume your task where you left off on your smartphone will only appear on your PC within five minutes of accessing the file from the smartphone.
