Pixel smartphones: Google reveals the life of batteries

Battery management remains a major concern for smartphone users. Google is now detailing the estimated lifespan of Pixel phone batteries in charge cycles, as well as best practices for maximizing their efficiency.

How long can your Pixel phone battery last?

In a new support article, Google explains that Pixel battery life is measured in charge cycles. A cycle is a full discharge followed by a recharge, including partial discharges. For example, using your phone from 100% to 50% and then charging it back to 100% is half a cycle (0.5). To find out how many cycles your Pixel smartphone has already done, go to Settings > About phone > Battery information. However, this information is only available on the Pixel 8a and newer models.

For Pixel 3 and later models (including the Pixel Fold), the battery retains up to 80% of its initial capacity after approximately 800 charge cycles. This estimate improves with the Pixel 8a and later models, which reach 1000 cycles.

These numbers are comparable to those of iPhones, with 1000 cycles for the most recent models, i.e. from the iPhone 15. Older models (iPhone 14 and before) can count on 500 full charge cycles while retaining 80% of their capacity. Figures that can be found on this Apple support page.

A few tips to maximize the life of your Pixel batteries

To extend the life of your batteries, Google offers several tips:

  • Update your Android smartphone to the latest version.
  • Charge in optimal conditions: keep your phone in a cool place (maximum 25 °C) and use a compatible USB-C charger. Avoid using your device while it is charging.
  • Minimize exposure to heat: Protect your phone from direct sunlight and external heat sources, especially at temperatures above 35°C.
  • Use built-in features: Enable adaptive charging or limit charging to 80%.
  • Prepare for long-term storage: If you are not using your phone for an extended period of time (more than 30 days), store it with at least 50% battery.
  • Replace the battery when the 800 or 1000 cycle threshold is reached or if there is a noticeable decrease in battery life.

These tips are intended to limit natural wear and tear and optimize battery performance. They join the usual recommendations of other manufacturers like Apple, which also emphasize temperature and charge cycles.
