Pokémon Presents: Pokémon JCC Pocket and Pokémon Z-A legends, which must be remembered

At the start of the year, Nintendo players are well spoiled. After a Direct dedicated to the productions of partner studios, it is the turn of the Pokémon Company to reveal its plans for the year 2024. While the Switch is living its last hours and rumors about the next console continue to amplify, the little pocket monsters still have a few surprises in store for the current generation. This February 27, gamers celebrate the famous Pokémon Day, marking the release of the Green and Blue versions in Japan in 1996. 28 years later, the creature collection RPG is a true cultural phenomenon that needs no introduction.

Pokémon are making their way onto our consoles, in cards at recess, on television and now even on our smartphones. In order to keep fans passionate, the parent company behind the franchise has made a habit of scheduling live streams called Pokémon Presents. These are packed with the latest information on current and upcoming projects and allow the franchise to be put in the spotlight, in addition to a few appearances during the usual Nintendo Directs. Each year, the presentation broadcast on the occasion of Pokémon Day is home to some big surprises, and today's is no exception. In addition to a few segments dedicated to mobile games, here are the essential information to remember from this short conference.

Pokémon Pocket Trading Card Game

A new virtual version of the Pokémon TCG will be available on smartphones in 2024. Faster and more modern, this application will offer immersive cards with flamboyant animations. Developed by Dena, the studio behind Pokémon Masters EX, as well as the teams behind the physical Pokémon TCG, this Pocket version will bring the best of the card game into a simple and effective version that can be taken anywhere. For now, no economic system has been confirmed for this game, which will reveal new information during an upcoming presentation. Will we be dealing with a free-to-play style like Hearthstone and Marvel Snap? Will the physical boosters contain codes for this new application? We do know at least that we will be entitled to two free boosters per day. To be continued.

Pokémon Legends Z-A

While the presence of Zarbis hinted at the arrival of a possible Let’s Go Johto or even Pokémon Legends Celebi, Game Freak invites us to return to the Kalos region. Introduced in the Pokémon X and Y versions, this part of the Pokémon world is loosely inspired by France. Since the release of these two titles in 2013, players have been eagerly awaiting the release of a Z opus, centered on the legendary Zygarde. Many unexplored and unexploited areas of these 3DS games gave hope for a third opus – as usual for the franchise – that we ultimately never saw.

After launching the new series of spin-offs Pokémon Legends with an episode dedicated to Arceus, Game Freak will finally fill the universe of the Kalos region in an opus entitled Pokémon Legends Z-A. No gameplay images were presented, but this first teaser suggests a scenario centered on the urban development of the city of Illumis, a clone of Paris with its Eiffel Tower. Does a promised release date of 2025 mean a launch on Switch 2? With the presence of the original Switch logo, nothing is less certain, but it may be a question of confusing the issues. One thing is certain: Zygarde and Kalos will finally have their moment of glory. Mega Evolution will also make its grand return to the franchise after several generations of lackluster mechanics, if we are to believe an appearance of the logo and the characteristic sound.
