You're not alone in your misfortune. Almost all PC gamers know the havoc that Steam sales can wreak. Although they are held once a season, they have the unfortunate habit of making us buy more than a dozen games, most of which rot in our library for months – or even years.
If you are also in this kind of situation, and your game catalog can no longer support another wave of promotions, here are 3 tips that should help you get out of it.
Buy relevant games
The first step is to sort through your wishlist. If you're like us, you probably have email or text notifications enabled to let you know when a game on your wishlist is on sale on Steam. This usually leads to reckless consumption, because you probably don't have time to dive into a new adventure at that moment.
We therefore advise you to review your entire wishlist and remove games that are no longer for you – whether in terms of the style of play, or if you own it on another platform, etc. To narrow down your list to your true tastes, don't forget to check out Valve's recommended content by clicking on "Discovery List."
Sorting Through Your Library
After the wishlist, it's time to move on to the library. Before you go all in on a game that's 75% off, take a moment to look at the titles you already own. How many never got launched? How many were abandoned after an hour of play? Steam lets you sort your library by playtime: a great way to see if you really need a new game... or if your backlog is already an insurmountable mountain.
Also, remember that any game with less than two hours of gameplay on the clock can be refunded without questions by Steam if it was purchased within the last 14 days. Don't sleep on your money if you're ever sure you've made a regrettable purchase.
Check out the gaming services at on-demand and/or free
Stop the “it’s cheap so I’ll take it” reflex. Steam sales are tempting, but ask yourself if you would buy this game at full price. If the answer is no, it’s not essential. Instead, take the time to check out all the services that offer you free games.
Amazon gives away about ten PC games per month to its Prime Gaming subscribers. The Epic Games Store also offers free games every Thursday. And all you have to do is take a look at Game Pass, or even PlayStation Plus if you have multiple gaming platforms that match your desires.
