Last June, at WWDC, Apple's big developer conference, the American manufacturer unveiled a brand new Siri fueled by Apple Intelligence. In addition to a change in interface, the assistant would be able to draw on user data to more precisely answer their questions, control third-party applications and their features, and "see" what the user is doing on the screen. This gives it more context and allows it to better serve the user.
A problematic report
Armed with all these functions, Siri must be able to find the file or song you discussed with a colleague in Messages. Or get your hands on a restaurant reservation by digging through emails and message history.
The Apple company had suggested that these three new features would not be released before 2025. For many observers familiar with Apple's practices, all of this was going to arrive with iOS 18.4, the "big" spring update whose final version is expected in April. But according to Mark Gurman, there are still some screws to tighten.
The Bloomberg snoop reports that internal tests are not conclusive enough to activate these functions right away — the first beta of iOS 18.4 for developers should arrive sometime next week. In order to make up for it, Apple could offer all or part of these new features in the beta, but disabled by default. We would have to wait for iOS 18.5, in May or June, for them to be automatically activated and fully functional.
There are at least two problems with this delay. First, Apple did not wait for these new features to be available to advertise them, boasting about functions that no one can use… But they have to sell iPhone 16s.
Second, this delays the launch of the future home automation hub, this small connected screen that will allow you to control all the other smart devices in the home. The device’s operation relies heavily on Apple Intelligence and Siri’s advanced features.
Siri’s work is not over yet: the assistant must subsequently connect to a generative AI in order to become as versatile and talkative as ChatGPT. This major change is not expected before 2026, however, well after the battle.
