The cat is a hit: the Mistral AI passes the million downloads

More than a year after its launch, Le Chat by Mistral AI has made a remarkable arrival on smartphones. In early February 2025, the French start-up unveiled the chatbot's Android and iOS application. The app quickly found itself at the top of downloads on the App Store and the Google Play Store in France.

Less than fifteen days later, the Le Chat application has exceeded the symbolic threshold of one million downloads, report our colleagues at Le Parisien. For Arthur Mensch, the founder of Mistral, "this is a first step that confirms that we can offer a popular AI, with unprecedented speed and that meets the personal and professional uses of the greatest number".

A spotlight on Mistral

To attract the curiosity of the French, Le Chat was able to count on the Summit for Action on AI, which was organized in Paris. Mistral was honored several times during the event. Emmanuel Macron even encouraged all French people to download the application on their phone. Le Chat was also able to surf on Mistral's various announcements, notably concerning a massive investment in France. The start-up will invest billions of euros in a data center dedicated to AI in Essonne.

In addition, Mistral will provide France Travail with a range of AI-based tools, such as a chatbot to help with writing, for advisors. These announcements have helped to put the spotlight on Le Chat. In this context, Free Mobile has even started offering access to Le Chat Pro to all its subscribers for one year.

A flying start for Le Chat

According to data from SensorTower, a mobile application market analysis platform, most downloads were accumulated between February 6 and 11, 2024, in the first few days following the arrival of Le Chat on Android and iPhone. In just a few days, Le Chat had already attracted 680,000 people. AI will now have to confirm its success over time. The Chat has also fallen back to 10th place in downloads on app stores.

As Arthur Mensch assures us, "The Chat will continue to improve and meet everyday needs" and Mistral is impatient "to unveil new features soon". Let’s bet that these new features will support the growth of the French AI user base.
