While Sony recently updated the PS2 sales figures, making it official that 160 million units have been sold, making the PlayStation 2 the first console in history to reach this milestone, Nintendo is determined to take its place. A few weeks ago, we learned that the Switch had just surpassed Sony's console in the United States. We learned today, through Nintendo's latest report, that the Switch had just crossed the 150 million consoles sold mark.
Switch: the absolute record in sight?
Will the Nintendo Switch become the best-selling video game console in history? For the moment, it is too early to confirm. Especially since the machine is reaching the end of its life and the Switch 2 is just around the corner. But, in any case, it is hot on Sony and the PS2.
After surpassing the PlayStation 2 on American soil, the Switch has reached the 150 million consoles sold mark since its launch in March 2017. More precisely, no less than 150.86 million units have been sold. Although the numbers continue to rise, we can feel a clear slowdown.
During the previous quarter, Nintendo had already revised its forecast downwards, with 12.5 million sales targets instead of 13.5 million. This quarter, Nintendo further lowers its forecast to 11 million, instead of 12.5 million. In total, the Switch records a drop of -30% in sales for the whole of 2024 compared to 2023.
These are fairly normal results for a console that will celebrate its eighth anniversary next month. Especially since in May 2024, Nintendo confirmed the development of its new machine which was to be unveiled before the end of the fiscal year, therefore before March 31, 2025. This trend should therefore continue from now on.
However, Nintendo does not intend to abandon its Switch and confirmed during its quarterly report that the company would continue to support the Switch beyond the Switch2, as long as there is demand. More than ever, the 160 million target could be reached in the coming years!
