After several weeks of teasing, the thinnest folding smartphone on the market has finally been announced. The Oppo Find N5, which will not have a version at OnePlus, has a thickness of 8.93 mm folded, and 4.21 mm unfolded. It therefore exceeds by a hair the previous champion, the Honor Magic V3, which displays for its part 9.2 mm and 4.35 mm. The Find N5 also wins the jackpot on weight by one gram, since it weighs 229 g, against 230 g for its rival. On the other hand, it is beaten by the Xiaomi Mix Fold 4 with its 228 g.
As you will have understood, the three Chinese manufacturers are very close and all manage to get close to classic smartphones. Rather than dwelling on the record of one or the other, it is worth highlighting the significant gap that is widening with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, limited to 12.1 mm thick when folded and 239 g. A delay that can be explained by a single factor: Samsung's sales volume, which remains higher than its competitors, due to the global release of its folding smartphones. Indeed, the European market is still struggling to motivate the Chinese giants to market their folding smartphones. Honor seems determined since its Magic Vs to occupy the field. Oppo and Xiaomi, on the other hand, are giving it a miss, at least in this book format, since they have both marketed a smartphone in a clamshell format, the Oppo Find N2 Flip and the Xiaomi Mix Flip.
A show of force on the Mac
While we will of course come back to the technical specifications of the Oppo Find N5 a little later, let's first focus on a particularly impressive moment of the conference. Oppo presented an application for Mac called O+ Connect.
This allows direct access to videos, images and documents stored on the smartphone directly from macOS. During a demonstration carried out a priori live on stage, the brand showed the fluidity of the system which seems close to perfection. The demonstration focused for example on the synchronization of a text document between the two devices or the possibility of dragging and dropping a file from the Mac interface to WhatsApp. The application also allows you to control the Mac from your Oppo Find N5. It is even possible to use the lower part of the screen, when it is folded at 90°, to use it as a trackpad.
Oppo had already tried to connect its smartphones to iPhone AirDrop, now the brand is targeting Macs with much more concrete uses. Indeed, their system to connect to AirDrop required the user of the targeted iPhone to install an application. Not very practical. A much less annoying constraint for a single Mac user with an Oppo Find N5 who would like to connect the two.
Still on the software side, but moving away from the Apple universe a little, Oppo has also confirmed that its Find N5 takes up one of the best ideas of the OnePlus Open, the Canvas system. This allows you to use several applications by letting them voluntarily come out of the screen and by offering greater freedom in navigating between several apps. It changes its name to become "boundless view" at Oppo.
Even more solid design
Let's get back to the design. The Oppo Find N5 integrates a fairly classic photo block in the shape of a central circle with three photo modules. In addition to the classic wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle, it has a 70 mm telephoto lens (equivalent to X3) supported by a 50 Mpx sensor, which means that it can achieve a lossless X6 zoom in theory.
The new Find also introduces a new titanium hinge called the "Flexion Hinge", which is supposed to improve the durability of the device and the rigidity of the system. The device is also the first foldable smartphone to be IPX8 + IPX9 certified. It can therefore be fully submerged in water, but you will have to be careful of dust. The Oppo Find N5 is presented in two colors: black and white, like the iPhone 16e.
High-end screens
As for the two screens, the brand has chosen an 8.12-inch foldable screen. She claims that the latter is wider than that of the iPad mini (8.3 inches), which makes no sense given that the two devices are not at all on the same screen ratio. The external screen is based on a 6.62-inch diagonal with a 20.7/9 ratio, which is still a little flat.
The external screen goes a little further than its counterpart in terms of brightness and definition. It displays a peak of 2450 cd/m² compared to 2100 cd/m² for the internal screen, as well as a definition of 431 ppi compared to 412 inside. In both cases, there is plenty to be happy about, especially since both panels are Dolby Vision certified.
Promising battery life and performance
Finally, a word about the 5600 mAh battery, which is also very impressive, since the Honor Magic V3 and Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 stop at 5150 and 5100 mAh respectively. Oppo announces that it has managed to achieve this thanks to a new generation of carbon silicon batteries, the famous technology that is revolutionizing the autonomy of mobiles. The battery also supports 80W wired and 50W wireless charging.
The Oppo Find N5 is the first foldable smartphone to be equipped with the most powerful chip on the market, the Snapdragon 8 Elite.
Oppo Find N5 price and availability
The Oppo Find N5 is sold for $2,499 Singapore, which is equivalent to 1790 euros excluding VAT. Adding about 20% taxes, we arrive at a price of 2148 euros. No announcement has been made, suggesting that the device will be available in Europe soon.
