Are you using Game Pass's Xbox Cloud Gaming? The service available to Ultimate members allows them to access the Game Pass catalog instantly, from a PC, Xbox console, or any other smart device, with a very high-speed internet connection. Despite the proliferation of cloud gaming offerings in recent years, this new way of playing is still relatively new and generally concerns a very specific niche of players. The failure of Google's Stadia service has also called into question the interest that gamers have in this type of platform. The possible losses in resolution, fluidity, or responsiveness of titles played in this way are enough to put off more than one player.
But against all odds, Microsoft's service is managing to find an ever-wider audience. In an interview with Game File, Phil Spencer has just revealed the latest surprising statistics for Xbox Cloud Gaming. While refraining from sharing exact figures, the president of Xbox has nevertheless given a striking estimate of the amount of time spent playing on the cloud:
In concrete terms, this means that at least 10% of the total playing time on the Xbox ecosystem is spent on the cloud, if not more. The accessibility of the service in the most popular Game Pass subscription certainly contributes to the development of this usually more expensive way of playing.
Cloud gaming for the general public
As a reminder, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs €14.99 per month, offers access to online gaming on Xbox as well as the vast catalog of Game Pass titles, playable on console, PC and cloud. Such versatility at such a price is currently unavailable from competitors, except for Amazon Luna. At NVIDIA GeForce Now, for example, players must pay a subscription between €10.99 per month and €21.99 per month to access their own library of PC games in the cloud. No titles are provided as part of the subscription and it is up to players to purchase their own games.
Today, only Xbox and Luna offer games in their subscription. This economic system is clearly more favorable since Stadia, which also required the additional purchase of games, is no longer with us to testify to a possible success. Comparing the offers of Microsoft and Amazon, it remains clear that Game Pass is the undisputed leader in terms of content offered. The majority of players do not pay this subscription exclusively for cloud gaming, but can decide to take advantage of it at any time to access their favorite games wherever they are. By continuing on this path, Xbox will certainly become one of the major pioneers of cloud gaming in the years to come.
