Zelda Echoes of Wisdom: the game map already reveals its secrets

Against all expectations, the Nintendo Switch will benefit from a final Zelda game before making way for the console that will succeed it. The news broke during the broadcast of a Nintendo Direct loaded with surprises this Tuesday, June 18. The cult franchise was not the only one to play the stars: Mario & Luigi, Mario Party and Metroid Prime 4 also played the stars during this presentation. However, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom did not fail to retain the attention of the spectators thanks to a subtlety striking to say the least. For the first time in history – with the exception of the Philips CDI spin-off – Princess Zelda takes the lead in this epic in order to rescue Link with the help of new powers.

Equipped with a magic scepter provided by a strange new fairy named Tri (a new manifestation of the Triforce?), the heroine is now able to duplicate elements of her environment. The first gameplay excerpts promise an experience centered on puzzles and riddles despite some fights also orchestrated by the new game mechanics. However, there is reason to regret that Nintendo is once again succumbing to the cliché of magical powers for a female protagonist.

After Princess Peach: Showtime, an epic dedicated to a “badass” Zelda would not have been refused. Knowing the developers of the franchise, this decision most certainly results from a need to reinvent the usual recipe. While waiting for the release of the title on September 26, the first trailer already allows to make some predictions about the setting of this adventure.

A title in the lineage of A Link to the Past

By taking over the artistic direction of the remake of A Link’s Awakening, Nintendo leaves little room for doubt concerning the title's placement in the great lineage of Zelda games. However, it is by analyzing the map and other details that the link between the games then appears as obvious. Experienced players will have noticed that the landscape presented is none other than that of A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds. Now all that remains is to to find out if this is a parallel universe or a direct sequel.

The incarnation of Ganon presented in the trailer is also taken from these two titles, confirming half-heartedly that The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will complete this part of the universe. If this is the case, the poor Link of this branch of the timeline will have lived through five adventures, namely A Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons and Echoes of Wisdom, before ending up reincarnated a few centuries later in A Link Between Worlds. The life of a Hyrule hero is not easy.
