In addition to a new trilogy, a standalone Star Wars film is in development. It will take place after the events of Star Wars IX and Ryan Gosling will play the lead role.

Disney and Lucasfilm are preparing a new Star Wars movie. This one will be independent, like Rogue One and Solo were, and Shawn Levy will be at the helm of the project. The director is known for his work on Stranger Things on television and for Free Guy, Adam Across Time and Deadpool and Wolverine for the cinema.

These three films have one thing in common: Ryan Gosling plays the lead role. The actor should also be asked again to become the headliner of this Star Wars feature film. And we learn a little more about him thanks to an interview with Kathleen Kennedy, boss of Lucasfilm, granted to Deadline.

A standalone film and a Star Wars trilogy in the pipeline

“Shawn's film is a standalone Star Wars story that will take place after the 9th, maybe five or six years later”, explains the famous producer. The plot will therefore take place in the era of the New Republic, and will introduce new characters, even if Kennedy does not close the door to a presence, in one way or another, of characters from the last trilogy (episodes VII to IX). That's all we'll know for now.

Kathleen Kennedy has also confirmed that a new Star Wars trilogy is indeed in the works. The project has been handed over to Simon Kinberg (who is involved in the animated series Star Wars Rebels and known for his X-Men films), and is said to be moving forward at a good pace. “It's going exceptionally well and he's writing the script right now. We'll probably see something around June," she said.

The story of this new trilogy is unknown, but Deadline claimed a few months ago that the Skywalkers would be reintegrated into all three films. However, the information has not been corroborated by an official source.
