AI: How to replace Gemini with Chatgpt on your smartphone?

The latest ChatGPT update has dealt a major blow to the voice assistant market. Since March 15, version 1.2025.070 of the application allows users to replace Google Gemini (which remains the standard option on Android) with OpenAI artificial intelligence.

A new option for Android users

Being able to choose their preferred voice assistant contributes to the interoperability effort initiated by Europe in recent years, and is part of a more general market trend. It must be said that while Gemini remains the option best integrated into the Google ecosystem, allowing support for home automation devices, adding appointments to the calendar or even controlling music playback, ChatGPT shines with its ability to answer complex questions and offer a fluid conversational experience, including through its voice mode. To a lesser extent, it also allows you to control some simple actions, such as triggering reminders and timers.

How to enable ChatGPT as your default assistant?

  • Download and install the latest version of ChatGPT (v1.2025.070) from the Play Store
  • Open your device's Settings
  • Go to the Apps section
  • Select “Default apps” in the General section
  • Tap on “Digital Assistant App”
  • Choose “ChatGPT” from the available options

Once configured, it will be possible to launch ChatGPT in several ways: either by long-pressing the home button or by swiping the screen diagonally using gesture navigation. If the option is enabled, it is also possible to hold down the power button to launch the voice assistant. The procedure is the same if you want to replace Gemini with Perplexity or Amazon Alexa. You can also choose to disable the option entirely. Please note, however, that this isn't a full-fledged integration, but rather a simple application shortcut. There's still a long way to go before we can fully benefit from AI assistants in our daily lives.
