Originally scheduled for release in May 2026, Avengers: Doomsday has been pushed back to December 16, 2026. Similarly, the finale of the multiverse saga, Avengers: Secret Wars has been delayed from May 2027 to December 15, 2027. While the wait only represents an additional seven months, it seems to change a lot of things for the understanding of the MCU. Both for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and for a mystery film, scheduled for July 2027.
Avengers: Doomsday, the first Avengers film not to be released in May
The reasons for the delay of the two Avengers projects remain unclear. However, it can be said that such films will require many months of post-production, particularly to refine the special effects. This is also part of Kevin Feige and Disney's desire to prioritize quality over quantity, and to recreate a sense of anticipation between each Marvel project. In any case, a December release represents a major departure for an Avengers film. Since 2012's The Avengers, every film featuring the Marvel superhero team has had a summer season. However, the choice of December is no coincidence for Disney. Several big hits were released during this period, starting with Spider-Man: No Way Home, the two Avatar films and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Towards a Spider-Man 4 free from the multiversal shackles?
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, initially planned after Avengers: Doomsday, will now precede it by a few months, while being the first film to follow Fantastic Four: The Beginning. Several rumors already spoke of a scenario taking place before the events of Avengers: Doomsday. The idea of a project focused more on street level was also at the center of discussions. This was in any case the wish of Destin Daniel Cretton, the director of the film (and of the underrated Shang Chi). Nothing now prevents the friendly spider from once again fighting villains of his size, without the chaperoning of other heroes (Iron Man, Doctor Strange and the other Spider-Men of the multiverse). In short, we could find a much more comics accurate Spider-Man. For now, we only know that actresses Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) and Liza Colon-Zayas (The Bear) have joined the cast, while Zendaya is expected to have a rather reduced role.
Which Marvel movie could be released in July 2027?
In addition to these postponements, Marvel has quietly removed three planned release dates from its schedule (February 2026, November 2026 and 2027). There's only one date left for a possible MCU film: July 23, 2027. If Disney keeps it in place, the film would fall between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. This seems logical, as, according to the comics, many events will take place between Doctor Doom's manipulations and the establishment of the Battleworld of Secret Wars. Here are some hypotheses regarding the nature of this mystery film. Doctor Strange 3: Times Run Out The character of the former Sorcerer Supreme remains one of the pillars of the MCU, especially in the context of the multiverse. The title "Time Runs Out" refers to a major story arc in the comics where realities begin to collapse, setting up the Secret Wars event. The beginnings were already set at the end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, when Stephen Strange goes with Clea (Charlize Theron) to repair an accidental incursion.
World War Hulk
The project has been haunting the halls of Marvel for several years. The problem lies in the distribution rights to the character, which belong to Universal Studios. If it comes to fruition, however, the storyline could take place directly on Battleworld—the reality created by Doctor Doom after the destruction of the multiverse—and include a whole host of multiversal Hulks.
Doomsday or Secret Wars in 2 parts
There are so many characters to look forward to in these two Avengers films, so many teams, plots, and subplots. It's hard to see how everything could be properly addressed in just two 2.5- or 3-hour films. The search for Wanda Maximoff, which began in Agatha All Along, could be a central part of a second installment of Avengers: Doomsday.
An X-Men reboot
Without the postponements of the two Avengers films, July 23, 2027, could have been a significant day for Marvel fans. Indeed, the new X-Men would undoubtedly have made their debut in the MCU. Now that Secret Wars is announced for December 2027, it would seem premature to introduce them, while a large part of the old X-Men are still likely to be around after Avengers: Doomsday (or not).
Towards a postponement of Spider-Man: Brand New Day?
Finally, we can't rule out a postponement of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Especially since the script and casting still don't seem to be finalized. However, the film is supposed to be released on July 29, 2026. A rather short timeframe, especially since Disney wants to offer successful digital effects. However, the film has already been pushed back by several months, and Sony—the other Spider-Man rights holder—may push to keep the originally announced date.
The next CCSD, which will take place from July 24 to 27, 2025, should shed light on the mysteries surrounding Phase Six of the MCU. What are your thoughts on these various questions? We're waiting for your opinion in the comments!
