In France, porn sites are required to implement an age verification system for visitors. This involves prohibiting minors from accessing their content. And platforms that do not comply with this new regulation can be blocked by access providers. But the matter is not that simple; first, there was a rather embarrassing error that allowed one of the websites to still be accessible, despite its inclusion on the blacklist.
And then this blocking only concerns sites based outside the European Union. To block portals installed on the old continent, it was first necessary to go through a tedious procedure with the Member States hosting these famous sites. But this time, here we are: a decree of February 26 lists the 17 online services that risk having their access blocked in France. And there are several heavyweights, including Pornhub and YouPorn, both based in Cyprus. There are also sites affiliated with Jacquie et Michel in Spain and Hungary.
But as L’Informé points out, the effective blocking is not for tomorrow. The platforms have three months to set up an age verification system; Arcom will be satisfied with checking the bank card (which teenagers may have), but in the long term, more robust technology will be required.
If the regulator considers that this is not enough, a formal notice could be served on the recalcitrant, with a penalty that could ultimately amount to 2% of global turnover.
