The operator Bouygues Telecom is taking its competitor Free to court for false advertising. It accuses it of having presented the Wi-Fi 7 of the Freebox Ultra in a misleading manner.
Internet service providers (ISPs) do not hold their competitors dear. It's not usually obvious, but every now and then, an operator will seize an opportunity to throw a spanner in the works of another. This time, it's Bouygues Telecom who's behind the scenes. The ISP is taking Free to court, accusing it of two very distinct things. First, for falsely advertising the Freebox Ultra's Wi-Fi 7.
At the time of the modem's unveiling in January 2024, Xavier Niel reiterated that Free was the first operator in the world to market Wi-Fi 7. This is also the major marketing argument of the following advertising campaign, with the slogan “New Wi-Fi 7, the best Wi-Fi“. Problem: the technology has not received certification on the operator's box. A finding on which Bouygues bases its complaint.
Free allegedly presented its Wi-Fi 7 in a misleading manner, Bouygues Telecom files a complaint
It is not for nothing that at the launch of its own Wi-Fi 7 box, the Bbox Ultym WiFi 7, the operator tackles Free by recalling that here, “it is not partial Wi-Fi 7 as is the case elsewhere“. The dig is clearly intentional. It also serves as belated revenge insofar as Bouygues did not appreciate some of Xavier Niel's outings in January 2024. This is the second part of the complaint filed last September with the Paris Commercial Court.

Speaking of the other innovation of the Freebox Ultra, the support for 10 gigabit optical fiber, the company's founder was quick to point out that his competitors found it useless. Bouygues is taking the heat like the others and believes it has been denigrated. Remember that to date, the latest Free box, as well as the associated repeaters, have still not received Wi-Fi 7 certification. Neither Free nor Bouygues Telecom have yet made any comment.
