Things are moving for Spider-Man 4! While the fourth installment of Peter Parker's adventures is set to begin filming in a few weeks, Marvel and Sony Pictures are keeping the project's content a secret. Aside from Tom Holland's obvious involvement, the two entities have shared little information. We only know that Daniel Destin Cretton will be directing, a first for the franchise, which until now relied on Jon Watts to immortalize the web-slinger. Deadline does, however, provide some crucial information about the cast. According to the American media, Sadie Sink has just joined the project. Revealed in Stranger Things, where she played the role of Max since season 2, the actress had never before set foot in the MCU. Deadline was unable to obtain any information on the character she has been given. However, we can already imagine that she has been given a crucial role... and an unexpected one.
Hair that leaves little room for doubt
While we will probably have to wait a little longer to find out for sure, viewers and comic book fans are already speculating on the role she has been given. With her red hair, Sadie Sink obviously recalls a key heroine in the Spider-Man mythology: Mary Jane. At Sam Raimi's, Kristen Dunst lent her features, while Marc Webb recruited Shailene Woodley to play her in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. While the scenes filmed were never released, the actress sported the character's signature haircut in the comics. Inseparable? Not really, since Jon Watts chose to entrust the role to Zendaya and make a major change in the personality of Peter Parker's love interest. While the multiverse gives Daniel Destin Cretton the opportunity to present alternative versions of MJ, we can already imagine that Sadie Sink was recruited to play another important character from the Marvel stable.
An appearance by Jean Grey, aka Phoenix, seems more likely. Since the acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, Marvel has been looking for a way to include the studio's characters within its cinematic universe. Professor Xavier, Deadpool, Wolverine, and Beast appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, their dedicated film, and a post-credits scene in The Marvels for the latter. While the priority in the superhero family department seems to be Fantastic Four for now, the return of the X-Men is in the works, and bringing in Jean Grey could further spark this new era for mutants. It's worth noting, however, that this would be the first time an X-Men character doesn't appear in the guise of their interpreter in previous sagas, namely Famke Janssen in Bryan Singer's film and Sophie Turner in Simon Kinberg's. The House of Ideas would be banking on a "street-level" adventure to contrast with the multiverse reunion of the third installment. The arrival of Daredevil on Disney+ also suggests that the company will be focusing more heavily on these human-scale intrigues, where it's about saving New York from what plagues it on a daily basis: crime. But in such a context, it's hard to imagine that Jean Grey won't find a place for herself. We'll probably have to wait a little while to find out.
Spider-Man 4, whose title is not known, will hit theaters on July 29. For now, we don't know if Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will be on the trip. The last time they were seen in theaters, they had simply forgotten about Peter Parker. As with the rest of humanity, Doctor Strange's spell erased all memory of Spider-Man's civilian persona.
