Tolkien Dictionary
By Vincent Ferré, published on August 21, 2024 by Bragelonne (€39.95)
Philologue Before becoming a novelist, Tolkien made the invention of languages the basis of his universe. “Stories were invented to provide a world for languages, and not the other way around.” This is how the author of the Lord of the Rings trilogy presented his saga to a friend. The use of these languages is also what gives depth to the mythology of Middle-earth, favors the plausibility of this fantasized universe. Published on August 21 by Bragelonne, Le Dictionnaire Tolkien brings together more than 60 contributors who analyze Tolkien’s universe through what fascinated him: words. In addition to the definition of certain emblematic terms of the lexicon, the dictionary edited by Vincent Ferré promises a fascinating dive into the folklore of the Lord of the Rings as much as into the life of its creator. A true bible, this thick work is a must-have.
The Silmarillion
Edition by Christopher Tolkien, published by Bourgois on September 1, 2021 (€24.90)
While the story described in The Rings of Power is fascinating, it takes many liberties. The same goes for all the events that precede Frodo's quest. With The Silmarillion, a historical book of Middle-earth, Tolkien laid the foundations of his fantasy universe from the “Music of the Ainur” to the “Third Age”. Less narrative than The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, the work edited by Christopher Tolkien is no less fascinating. The author's son published a compilation of notes and manuscripts after his death to offer worshipers a little more of Middle-earth. This edition also includes illustrations by Ted Nasmith to accompany the reading.
Beren and Lúthien
By J.R.R Tolkien, published by Christopher Tolkien at Bourgois on May 23, 2025 (€30)
Discover the love story that gave birth to the world of The Lord of the Rings. When his path crosses that of Edith Bratt, Tolkien becomes fond of this orphan who will later become his wife. She inspires an important character in his imagination: Lúthien. When his wife dies, he will have the character's name engraved on her tomb. Lúthien is the first Elf to marry a human. Beren - ready to do anything to win the hand of the woman he loves - will embark on a quest in Middle-earth to take back the Silmaril from the hands of the terrible god Morgoth. In these 320 pages of romantic adventures, Alan Lee signs nine illustrations enhanced by Bourgois' editing work.
