Things are moving at DC. Before the franchise arrives in theaters—the new batch led by James Gunn and Peter Safran—teams are busy developing several projects centered around some iconic glossy heroes. After Superman next July, and Supergirl a year later, the company wants to tell the story of Clayface, Batman and his offspring, and the creature Swamp Thing. More recently, another project has been getting people talking. It promised to feature a legendary actor. Daniel Craig was indeed tipped to star in Luca Guadagnino's Sgt. Rock. The two men had already collaborated on Queer, which was released in theaters a few weeks ago. The former 007 star has, however, distanced himself and left the hero's role vacant.
According to information from Deadline, Guadagnino had no trouble getting back on his feet. Another actor is reportedly in DC's sights... and he's part of the company. The American media reports that discussions have begun around Colin Farrell. He could thus be entrusted with the role of Franklin John Rock in this cinematic proposal to take place during the Second World War. As a reminder, Sgt. Rock was born in 1959 under the pencil of Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert in the comic Our Army at War #83. The protagonist is a soldier in World War II who served as an non-commissioned infantry officer. The leader of Easy Company is still one of the most appreciated heroes among comic book readers.
DC sees double
Colin Farrell is already an essential component of the DC Universe in cinema and on the small screen. Since The Batman in 2022, he has been Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. A role that should theoretically prevent him from taking over another in the DC Universe. Except that, as has been mentioned several times, Matt Reeves' film is not evolving under the same banner and the elements described are not related to those that Gunn and Safran want to immortalize. Colin Farrell also has another ace up his sleeve; audience confusion should not be a problem. He's heavily made up for his role with Reeves, unrecognizable.
It remains to be seen how this project will fit into Farrell's already busy schedule. According to sources interviewed by Deadline, the teams should have to deal with the shooting of Sugar season 2 for Apple TV+ and the film The Ballad of Small Player by Edward Berger. For your information, the script is to be written by Justin Kuritzkes. He is the one behind Queer and Challengers.
