Telecom operator comparison specialist Zone ADSL&Fibre has unveiled its 2025 fiber speed rankings. The findings are clear: Free stands out this year thanks to a strong increase in its performance, while fiber speeds in France are experiencing a significant overall improvement.
Fixed internet is faster than ever in France, according to the latest report from Zone ADSL&Fibre. The study reveals a significant increase in fiber speeds in France, with a 52% increase in speeds in four years. In 2024, the average download speed will be 456 Mbit/s, compared to 365 Mbit/s for the average upload speed. Latency (ping) remains very low, at 9.5 ms. This increase is the result of massive investments and continuous network improvements as part of the France Très Haut Débit Plan, which aims for almost total fiber coverage by the end of 2025.
In addition to the increase in speeds, Arcep has also noted a decrease in outages in over the past year, a sign of improved network stability thanks to the optimization of fiber infrastructure. The arrival of commercial offers offering higher theoretical speeds, including 8 Gbit/s and Wi-Fi 7 since the beginning of 2024, also contributes to this positive dynamic.
Free is well ahead of its competitors
The 2025 ranking highlights Free's impressive performance. The operator is well ahead in terms of speeds, both downloading and uploading, leaving its competitors far behind. Free has an average download speed of 561 Mbit/s and an average upload speed of 415 Mbit/s.
"For years, Free has been driving the market upwards by pushing the limits of speeds and technologies. It is currently the only one to offer 5 Gbit/s on a mid-range box with its Freebox Pop, the first to have launched symmetrical 8 Gbit/s with its Freebox Ultra at the start of 2024, but also the only one to offer Wi-Fi 7 on the market [Bouygues Telecom now offers a Wi-Fi 7 box, Editor's note]. It is therefore not surprising that it is ahead of its competitors in terms of fiber speed," explains Julia Jimenez, Communications Director at Zone ADSL&Fibre, Furthermore, the ranking reveals the difficulties encountered by Orange in aligning itself with market developments. The historic operator is positioned last in the ranking, with an average download speed of 407 Mbit/s and an average upload speed of 335 Mbit/s. Zone ADSL&Fibre highlights in particular Orange's delay in increasing the speeds of its Sosh Box, which was not effective until the end of 2024. Study Methodology Zone ADSL&Fibre's 2025 fiber speed ranking is based on the statistical analysis of 1,288,254 speed tests carried out in 2024 on its site. This analysis makes it possible to determine the average values by technology, operator and region for download speed, upload speed and latency. The results of the study are encouraging for the coming year in terms of fiber optics. We can expect a continued increase in speeds in France while Free has a good chance of remaining in the lead in terms of speeds. However, other operators could intensify their efforts to catch up and become more competitive in terms of speeds. This could involve democratizing commercial offers offering very high speeds.Orange is struggling to keep pace
