Freebox: This new update must be installed quickly, here is what it contains

This is an update that affects several thousand Freeboxes in France. The Freebox Revolution, Pop, Delta, and Ultra will roll out significant new features in terms of Wi-Fi security. All of the provider's recent boxes are affected; we're taking stock of the 4.9.0 software version.

Wi-Fi Security

The main innovation in this 4.9.0 update lies in the integration of WPA3 Wi-Fi protection protocols. These new standards represent a major evolution compared to WPA2, with more robust encryption of wireless communications and better protection against attacks. Free specifies, however, that older devices will have to continue to use the classic WPA2 protocol, as these are not compatible with the new security standards.

Another notable improvement is that the guest Wi-Fi network now has its own network name (SSID). Previously configured guest Wi-Fi keys will remain functional despite this change. In terms of performance, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi has been optimized specifically for virtual machines on Freebox Pop and Ultra compatible with Wi-Fi 7. This improvement should provide better stability and more consistent speeds.

Practical features

Beyond the Wi-Fi improvements, this update introduces the ability to control the front LED of the Pop and Ultra models directly from the Freebox OS interface. A feature requested by many users who will now be able to adjust or disable the indicator light according to their preferences. Several persistent bugs have also been fixed, ranging from the download manager freezing issue that occurred at each reboot, to difficulties with read-only SMB sharing on iOS 18.

  • Download manager crash that occurred on each reboot
  • Difficulties with read-only SMB sharing on iOS 18 with the Apple File application
  • Malfunctions related to malformed URLs that affected the management of Freebox cameras and sharing links
  • Correction of the bug specific to Mediatek MT7927 stations

How to install the update?

Installing version 4.9.0 is done simply by restarting the Freebox. Users have several options: connecting to the Freebox OS interface via a web browser, using the Freebox Connect mobile app available on iOS and Android, or performing the operation directly from their Freebox screen. While this latest version is not directly necessary for the proper functioning of the Internet box, we recommend that you proceed with the installation quickly to benefit from the latest protections and security optimizations.
