Google Chrome could soon integrate one of the best features of Microsoft Edge

Until now, the Chrome browser didn't offer a built-in solution for displaying two tabs side by side on the same screen, forcing users to resort to extensions, native operating system features, or manual window resizing. But today we learned that Google is actively working on a screen sharing feature directly integrated into Chrome.

A feature Chrome in development for months

The first traces of this new feature were spotted back in January by @Leopeva64, a well-known Chrome analyst on X. Since then, the tool has evolved and seems to be in the refinement phase. According to his observations, the future "Show side by side" option would be activated by a simple right-click on a tab, allowing it to automatically align with an adjacent tab.

Once activated, this split display would group the two tabs under a single space in the tab bar. Floating preview cards would help better identify the content being displayed. Like Microsoft Edge, Chrome could also offer a dedicated button in the toolbar for faster access and advanced customization of split mode.

An alternative to existing solutions

Currently, Chrome users must turn to alternative solutions to display multiple tabs simultaneously. :

  • Dedicated Chrome extensions that allow you to organize tabs in a tiled manner, but require additional installation;
  • Manual resizing, which remains a universal method, but is not very ergonomic;
  • Features integrated into OSes, such as Snap Assist on Windows or Split View on macOS, which already facilitate the organization of several windows, but which do not work directly in Chrome.

This future integrated option would greatly facilitate tab management for users who need a quick split view to simply be more productive. For now, the feature This feature isn't available on either the stable or Canary versions of Chrome, and there's no indication yet that it will be tested via an experimental flag. Its arrival may be contingent on technical adjustments or extended testing before Google eventually rolls it out in some form. Wait and see, then.
