Google continues to enrich its AI assistant with ever more advanced tools. A new update to the mobile app simplifies access to key functions. It also marks the arrival of a tool designed to create content directly from your smartphone.
Artificial intelligence applications are evolving very quickly. On mobile, developers are seeking to simplify interfaces while adding more advanced functions. For example, it becomes possible to generate text, create images, or perform complex searches directly from a simple app. These additions make them more useful in everyday life, whether for writing a message, summarizing an article, or answering a specific question.
Gemini, Google's AI assistant, is following this trend with regular updates. By January 2025, the Android app had already received a major overhaul, modernizing its interface and integrating a more compact "plus" menu (+). The latter already offered quick access to the camera, gallery, and certain files. Now, Google is pushing it even further with a new design and the addition of Canvas, a tool designed for writing text or generating code, directly from the mobile app.

The new "plus" menu is no longer presented as a vertical list. It now displays visual buttons side by side, to quickly access the main functions: camera, gallery, files and Google Drive (only on Android). Just below, two new shortcuts appear. The first, "Deep Research", allows you to launch an in-depth query without changing templates. The second, "Canvas", opens a space dedicated to content creation, whether for structured documents or simple code.
Canvas, already available on the web, is coming to mobile for the first time. On smartphone, the tool is more limited: it does not include a split-screen interface and does not allow direct editing of generated content. To modify a document, the user must return to the main conversation and submit a new instruction. However, it is possible to consult previous and subsequent versions using a navigation bar located at the top of the screen. This integration is part of a series of recent additions to Gemini, such as the Audio Overviews feature, which allows you to verbally summarize answers in certain situations.
