Meta has just launched its smart assistant in Europe after a long wait. Starting this week, users will be able to ask Meta AI questions directly on WhatsApp, Messenger, or Instagram. A new, simple and fast way to get answers without leaving your favorite apps.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into users' daily lives, making many tasks simpler and faster. Today, assistants like Gemini Advanced, which comes with the Pixel 9, or ChatGPT already allow you to perform advanced searches, write texts or generate images. These tools offer valuable assistance, whether for planning a trip, obtaining information or even answering complex questions. However, in Europe, the deployment of these technologies is often hampered by strict data protection rules.
After nearly a year of discussions with the authorities, the company has finally succeeded in obtaining authorization to launch its AI assistant in Europe. Starting this week, Meta AI will be available in 41 countries and 21 overseas territories. It will be directly integrated into the group's main applications, including WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook and Instagram. Thanks to With this integration, users will not need to install an additional app to access Meta's artificial intelligence.
Meta AI is coming to WhatsApp and Messenger with a limited model in Europe
Unlike the US version, the European version of Meta AI has restricted features. For example, it cannot generate images via the Meta Imagine tool, a feature that is very popular in the United States. Additionally, the assistant does not yet have a memory, meaning it cannot personalize its responses based on previous interactions with a user. These limitations are largely due to European regulatory requirements, which impose strict rules on the use of personal data. To comply with these constraints, the assistant operates only in text mode and does not rely on user data for its training. The latter will be available in six languages, including French.
Despite these restrictions, Meta AI offers many possibilities. It can be used directly in chats by typing “@MetaAI” followed by a question or request. For example, it could help with trip planning, restaurant recommendations, or even resolving debates between friends. The assistant will also be able to search the web for information and display relevant content without the user having to leave the app. Meta plans to gradually add new features to bring the European version in line with the one available in the United States, while respecting local regulations.
