This January 16th is a day to mark with a white stone. After months, even years, of rumors and leaks, Nintendo has finally decided to reveal its next console. The Nintendo Switch 2 is revealed today in a succinct trailer, which shows us the machine from every angle. Controllers, screen, connectivity, and even games, almost everything was shown… but nothing was really discussed except the backward compatibility of current cartridges.
That was all it took to build enthusiasm among the company's fans. The Nintendo Switch 2 is already trending on all social networks, both for the product and for the way Nintendo communicated about the product. It must be said that such a level of relaxation is rare for a manufacturer. Yet, you are far from having seen everything.
Back to the Future
Indeed, only the most observant will have noticed that this trailer hides a few little surprises. Unpublished images of a brand new Mario Kart have been released. Just a few seconds that tell us not only that a title is in preparation, and will surely accompany the release of the console, but also that a character has been completely reworked.
This is Donkey Kong, one of the players' favorite characters among all those who populate the Mario franchise as a whole. We can see him on his kart behind his racing competitors, with a different face... but familiar. In reality, this is the design created for the Super Mario Bros. film released in 2023. If we regret a little the old design of the gorilla, we can understand Nintendo's desire to link all its universes to each other. The oldest will also recognize that this face is close to the original appearance of Donkey Kong, so it is also a tribute to the character over the long term.
Can we expect other changes in the next Mario Kart? For the moment, there is no indication that other characters will be affected. In addition, Princess Peach had hardly been reworked in the title of which she is the heroine, despite the completely different design of the character in the Illumination film.

But that's not all! This new Mario Kart has a lot of new features in store for us, starting with the gameplay. A general plan of the circuit tells us that the game will most certainly contain up to 24 participants at a time, compared to 12 until now. This will be felt the most in online multiplayer, the level being particularly high during competitions.
Finally, the trailer gives us a serious clue about the name of the Mario Kart game. Most players agree that the next title in the franchise should be Mario Kart 10, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe serving as the ninth official opus. However, the game will indeed be called Mario Kart 9 as the advertising barriers on the circuit show us. In fact, the Luigi Tires sign adopts a typography so specific that the “g” actually looks like a “9”. This could also be a coincidence, but in the world of Nintendo, this does not exist. We can also see a new object, but it is difficult to know for the moment what power it has.
