At almost seven years old, the Nintendo Switch is enjoying triumphant success. This year, it became the third best-selling console in history, driven by one of the strong licenses and a great game library. It also owes this success to its hybrid format, allowing it to juggle between home console and portable console. On the other hand, we cannot say that the Switch is helped by its multimedia functions.
Despite its hybrid approach, Nintendo limits this aspect and prefers to focus solely on the video game aspect. Far from the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One – the other flagship eighth-generation consoles – the Switch has always had to settle for a handful of apps like YouTube or Twitch. The famous streaming platform will however say goodbye to the console in a few days.
Twich announces the end of support for its application for the Nintendo console. Starting November 6, 2023, it will no longer be possible to download the Twitch app on the eShop. Those who already have the app on their console will lose access to from January 31, 2024.
A sudden disappearance that should not, however, disrupt the habits of Switch owners. Indeed, the application is very basic and does not integrate certain flagship functions. Unlike other consoles, it is not possible to broadcast a game from the console or access the chat. Significant limitations that don't make the experience very pleasant.
Will Twitch return to the Switch 2?
At the Gizmodo site, a Twitch spokesperson explains: “We recently made the difficult decision to remove the Twitch application from the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo remains a valued partner and we appreciate all the support that the Switch community has given to Twitch and our streamers”.
The company does not specify the reasons that led it to remove its application. Some may see it as a desire to prepare for Nintendo's next console. The Switch 2 is said to be much more powerful and could help deliver a more complete version of Twitch.
