No Radeon RX 9000 Series of planned at MSI, does the manufacturer abandon AMD?

Unlike other historical partners of AMD, MSI has decided to completely ignore the current generation of graphics cards based on the RDNA 4 architecture. In other words, the manufacturer has deliberately chosen not to produce a Radeon RX 9000 Series, effectively turning its back on the RX 9700 and RX 9700 XT, which have generally been successful. Surprising at first glance, this strategic decision could actually not be as improvised as it seems.

A collaboration just on hold, or definitely interrupted?

While MSI offered a wide range of Radeon RX 5000 Series and RX 6000 Series, with 39 distinct models for each generation, the manufacturer has considerably reduced its offer of RDNA 3 graphics cards, with only four custom models of Radeon RX 7000 Series. This reduction was accompanied by a reuse of cooling systems designed for the previous generation, suggesting a lower allocation of resources to research and development than for its NVIDIA card lineup.

It's difficult to know exactly what prompted the manufacturer to make this decision; perhaps the dominance of GeForce RTX in the graphics card market offers a greater return on investment, or EVGA's departure from this market. in 2022 created an opportunity for MSI to strengthen its position as NVIDIA's preferred partner (which it becomes de facto by moving away from AMD)? Still, the void left by the manufacturer could create opportunities for other emerging players like Acer.

With AMD planning to return to the high-end graphics card segment with its next generation of graphics cards based on the UDNA (Unified DNA architecture, the door still remains open for MSI. But it will be difficult for the manufacturer to restart the research and development dynamic, now that the partnership with AMD has been interrupted.
