Pixar surprises his world and formalizes Coco 2

Finally, Adrian Molina did have another project on the go. More than a year after stepping down as director for Elio, Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian took over, and he has been announced as directing Coco 2. He is reuniting with his co-director, Lee Unkrich. The announcement was made yesterday by Bob Iger, during a shareholders' meeting.

The company's CEO even shared the progress of this project. “Although the film is still in its early stages, we know it will be full of humor, tenderness, and adventure”. He promises to reveal more soon, not hiding his enthusiasm for this unexpected sequel. It must be said that, unlike many films from the animation stable, Coco had all the makings of a unique production.

As a reminder, the first film follows a 12-year-old boy who dreams of becoming a musician. However, in his family, music is completely forbidden. On the Day of the Dead, he embarks on a whirlwind and moving adventure to unravel the mysteries of his family. Colorful, captivating, and enchanting, Pixar's offering was a resounding success in theaters. It even earned Pixar two Oscars, for Best Animated Feature and Best Song, and a Golden Globe.

Audience enthusiasm for the film released in 2017 finally convinced Pixar to return. As a reminder, Coco grossed $817 million at the global box office. The tidal wave of Inside Out 2, $1.6 billion, has undoubtedly convinced the leaping lamp of the merits of such a revival for Miguel's adventures ($814 million).

For 2029 at the earliest

The announcement of this development is accompanied by a provisional release date. Viewers will have to be patient. Bob Iger discusses the year 2029. After a very complicated post-COVID period, the failure of Buzz Lightyear and the joint releases of Luca and Soul on Disney+, Pixar seems to be finding its way back to the spotlight. However, this summer will mark the return of completely original stories to theaters. Without the reputation of an iconic saga in its catalog, will the company succeed in attracting viewers? In 2023, despite a rather worrying start, Elementary had managed to to raise more than $496 million. This is far from the staggering figures of Inside Out 2, but we can imagine that Elio, which is released in theaters next June, will do at least as well.

Moreover, we can cite the excellent animated series Won or Lost, which was the studio's first original series on Disney+. It will also be the last, as Bob Iger has decided to abandon all television productions for a time and focus on the big screen.
