Pixel 10: Google muscle its game with a real optical zoom and more AI

Until now, only the Pro models of the Pixel were entitled to three sensors on the back. The Pixel 9, for example, was limited to a wide-angle and an ultra-wide-angle. With the Pixel 10, Google has decided to end this limitation by adding a true telephoto sensor with a periscopic zoom system. The result: a much more effective optical zoom and more natural long-distance shots.

A Pixel that sees further

As a reminder, the Pixel 9 compensated for the lack of a telephoto lens with a digital zoom based on on a crop of the main sensor and the Super Res Zoom 8x technology. If this process was already effective, a real dedicated sensor will allow to obtain better results without relying too much on software processing. In other words, we should finally be able to zoom without losing too much quality.

In addition to the hardware, Google continues to improve its algorithms with its famous HDR+ and "remosaicing", a technique that merges several images taken at different exposures to obtain maximum detail. Combined with a telephoto lens, this processing should offer even more impressive images.

Another new feature An interesting development: the Pixel 10 will feature the fifth generation of Google's in-house chip, the Tensor G5. This new chip should provide a performance boost. With a very powerful Arm Cortex-X4 core, five Cortex-A725 cores to handle intermediate tasks, and two Cortex-A520 cores for energy efficiency, the Pixel 10 will be faster and smoother.

On the graphics side, Google is reportedly ditching the Mali architecture in favor of a GPU from Imagination Technologies. In other words, better ray tracing support for more realistic games, but also improvements for photos and videos.

Artificial intelligence is obviously not left out. The Tensor G5's AI engine should offer a performance increase of almost 15%. We can expect faster voice recognition, even more advanced photo editing, and other increasingly intelligent features.

With these new features, Google seems to be focusing on concrete improvements rather than a radical design change. If the price remains stable, the Pixel 10 will continue the solid path left by by its predecessors, while improving the photo part.
