On April 13, we will have the joy of discovering the new season of The Last Of Us on HBO Max. Two years after the launch of the series, we will finally discover the continuation of Joel and Ellie's journey, after their first perilous journey across the United States to find the fireflies.
A few hours ago, showrunners Neil Druckmann (also co-president of Naughty Dog) and Craig Mazin were able to speak about the future of the series in an interview with Variety magazine. And clearly, both men seem a little concerned about the future of the series.
The Last Of Us: 4 seasons, and finally 2 games?
With the series The Last Of Us, the intentions of Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog and creator of the successful video game license were clear: adapt the games and offer two complementary media that would offer players and spectators a global and complete experience.
To put it simply, the idea was not to adapt the games identically. Neil Druckmann wanted to take most of the plot and cult scenes, but also offer new moments, never seen in the games. And, conversely, cut certain passages that were not at all adapted to the series format. As a result, the series The Last Of Us became complementary to the games, allowing players to delve deeper into certain characters (like episode 3 centered on Bill). And for people who discovered The Last Of Us with the series, it offered them the possibility to extend their experience with the game, which is necessarily much more immersive.
With season 2, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin have the same goal, taking even more time and offering even more new moments. This is why The Last Of Us Part II will be adapted into at least two seasons. The third season, already in pre-production, will adapt the second part of the Naughty Dog game released in June 2020.
According to Francesca Orsi, vice president of programming at HBO, the series The Last Of Us would be entitled to four seasons. This implies that the final season should be an adaptation of the third game, The Last Of Us Part III, which has not yet been officially announced by Naughty Dog.
But, things do not seem that simple. And apparently, Neil Druckmann is no longer really sure that there will be a third game. And for his part, Craig Mazin seems concerned about the rest of the series and suggests that the fourth season could also be an adaptation of The Last Of Us Part II.
In the latest interview with Variety, Craig Mazin expresses his concern and the difficulties surrounding this adaptation:
Craig Mazin makes us understand that after season 03, they do not want to wait several years for the third game to come out. So, should we understand that there will ultimately be only four seasons, centered on the two The Last Of Us games, and that Part II will be adapted through three seasons that will take their time with quite a few new sequences? For the moment, it is impossible to confirm anything, but Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin seem slightly vague, as much as their communication. To be continued!
