Microsoft acknowledges that the latest Windows 11 beta update may cause video games to crash. Except that the culprit this time wouldn't be the operating system.
Even if, fortunately, updating Windows 11 goes smoothly in the majority of cases, bugs do occur. This is especially true for more adventurous users enrolled in the Windows Insider program. It allows users to receive new features early, but with the understanding that the risk of encountering a problem is much greater than with the stable version of the operating system. This is the goal: to report these issues to Microsoft so that they can be corrected before the global deployment of the update.
For once, the bug spotted in build 27808 of Windows 11 is clearly not the company's fault. The latter also confirms this on its blog: “We are investigating a d3d9.dll crash that prevents several applications from launching starting with version 27802 for some Insiders. Behind this file name is DirectX 9, a program essential for video games in particular, which no longer work here.
If you have installed the latest beta version of Windows 11, some games will no longer launch
Note that other software relies on DirectX 9, not just games, and that they too are impacted. For example PowerPoint, Internet browsers, and certain websites. But who is to blame? According to feedback from several users, it would be Nvidia. Microsoft does not confirm this, however. Reports suggest a potential conflict between the brand's graphics cards and the famous .dll file mentioned.

Some have found a temporary solution since there will be no fix before the next build. However, the approach is rather radical. You must first go to the Task Manager and disable Nvidia. Next, you need to find an older version of the d3d9.dll file from a previous build of Windows 11 and replace the broken one. Painful, but it works.
