Clearly, Microsoft isn't just preparing the Xbox Prime and its new controller for the coming weeks and months. Apparently, a portable Xbox is in the works, with the first model possibly even coming out at the end of this year. What's the real story? Where do we stand with these rumors? Let's take stock right away.
The portable Xbox in preparation
We've known for several months now that Microsoft is preparing its future with new hardware and could also head into the field of portable consoles. Already last November, new rumors suggested that the Xbox Portable was intended to be similar to the PS Portal.
Today, Windows Central brings us new details. Apparently, a first portable console, codenamed "Keenan", is planned for release as early as 2025. For the moment, it is not yet known whether the release schedule will be respected or not. In terms of design, we should have a console in the direct lineage of the Xbox Series X/S, knowing that the machine is designed in partnership with OEM, an equipment manufacturer that has already collaborated with brands like Lenovo, ASUS or Razer.
Also according to information from Windows Central, this portable console should be quite close to the ROG Ally and other machines of the kind. It should be a portable PC, under Windows, with the Microsoft Store and the PC Game Pass at the center of its ecosystem. Windows Central confirms that players should be able to install Steam on this Xbox Portable.
Windows Central continues its report by indicating that Microsoft's goal with this first portable Xbox would be to conduct a large-scale test for widgets or to offer a more streamlined OS experience.
Finally, Windows Central confirms that Xbox Prime, the new generation of consoles, is indeed in preparation, validated by Satya Nadella with the goal of creating a true ecosystem with the portable console and the new controller. Moreover, the new controller could connect directly via the cloud, which would facilitate their switching from one device to another.
