The Power Rangers back on Disney+!

The Power Rangers back on Disney+!

This isn't the first time the Power Rangers have attempted a comeback. Since Hasbro purchased the franchise in 2018, several projects have been considered, but none have resulted in a sustainable production. A reboot was planned for Netflix, but it was canceled before it could see the light of day. As for the 2017 film produced by Lionsgate, which adopted a darker and more mature tone, it didn't meet with the expected success. at the box office, ending hopes of a new film franchise.

The chaotic journey of the franchise

Since its debut in 1993 with Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, the series has gone through many iterations. Several films were also released in the 90s, but it is always the serial format that has brought the fan community together.

The Power Rangers have their roots in the Japanese series Super Sentai, from which they have borrowed combat images and iconic costumes. Adapted for the American audience, the franchise follows a group of teenagers capable of transforming into superheroes and piloting immense robots, the famous Megazords, to confront the forces of evil. This simple concept, combined with colorful special effects and a dynamic tone, has made the Power Rangers a true global phenomenon.

The announcement of a partnership with Disney+ could well change the game. The streaming platform has already demonstrated its ability to produce epic family content, as evidenced by the success of Percy Jackson. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, who won over audiences with this adaptation, will bring their experience and expertise to modernize the Power Rangers universe.

The project aims to "reinvent the franchise for a whole new generation of fans, while satisfying those who already know and love the world of Power Rangers," according to Hasbro. While details about the story and tone of the series remain unclear, Disney+'s involvement inspires confidence, as the platform is so adept at producing content intended for both to a young audience and to another, more nostalgic audience.

Will this new attempt finally give a second wind to the Power Rangers? Will it meet the same fate as the previous attempts? If nostalgia for the 90s still has a bright future ahead of it, we will have to see how Disney+ will go about dusting off the Power Rangers franchise.
