The announcement is unlikely to improve our eco-anxiety. The Red Cross has published its report "Extreme Climate Events: Are We Prepared for the Inevitable?", produced in collaboration with the Research Center for the Study and Observation of Living Conditions (Crédoc).
A pessimistic but lucid document, in which the association looks back at the latest climate disasters recorded in France, and the many to come. The findings are worrying: “75% [of French people] do not feel prepared for floods, 73% for forest fires, 59% for heat waves.““
10 concrete recommendations
To better prepare populations for future climate disasters, the Red Cross has detailed a list of 10 recommendations for the French. This includes better training in life-saving actions, the provision of psychological support during and after crises, the stockpiling of first aid equipment, and the creation of a corps of trained volunteers who can be deployed in the event of an emergency.
According to the Red Cross, it is also necessary for each household to prepare an emergency bag, designed to cover all of a family's vital needs in the event of a sudden evacuation. The assurance of always being equipped, and of not forgetting anything in the rush, indicates the association on its official website.
What does a good emergency bag contain?
In its recommendations, the Red Cross indicates that the emergency bag must cover the five vital needs of a family in the event of a crisis. Concretely, it is necessary to be able to:
- Feed
- Hydrate
- Heal
- Protect yourself
- Signal
The emergency bag must be able to cover all of these needs for a period of 24 to 48 hours, depending on the type of climate disaster and the situation. Obviously, the composition of this “Catakit” must be adapted according to the specific needs of each person.
In addition to non-perishable food and basic tools, it is necessary to equip yourself with medication, a survival kit, as well as a range of basic tools.
The basic Catakit kit
- A radio battery + spare batteries
- Medicines and treatments
- First aid kit (bandage, alcohol, compresses, etc.)
- Basic tools (knife, cutlery, screwdriver, etc.)
- Non-perishable food without cooking
- Plenty of drinking water
- Signaling tools (whistle, flares, etc.)
- Flashlight + spare batteries
- Hygiene kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, menstrual protection, etc.)
- Notepad and pencils
- Exchange pouch with copies of identity documents, charger, keys, money liquid...)
This kit should be placed in an accessible location, which can be taken quickly in the event of an evacuation. Its contents should be checked once a year to ensure that the expiration date of medications and food has not expired. Care should also be taken to replenish it if needed.
