With its pioneering position in the folding smartphone market, Samsung is quietly navigating from one launch to the next. The Korean brand is gradually improving its formula, even if it means giving the impression of marking time compared to Chinese brands that are pushing forward by integrating the latest technologies like the Oppo Find N5.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 are not expected to revolutionize the formula. Particularly on charging, we learn from leaker Abhishek Yadav who works on X (formerly Twitter). He reports that the Chinese certification body 3C has registered both models and the two foldables would still be capped at 25W of charging power.
25W in 2025, put into perspective
It is of course more complicated to integrate fast charging into a folding smartphone. The hinge literally cuts the structure of the smartphone in two, often requiring the battery to be divided into two blocks, the technological challenge is greater. That said, many of Samsung's competitors manage to offer better, such as the Honor Magic V3 which goes up to 66W or the Xiaomi MIX Flip with 67W.
Samsung, like Apple or Google, has never put much emphasis on fast charging. But even if we compare the possible 25W of the next foldables to Samsung itself, it seems low. Indeed, the Galaxy S25 Ultra goes up to 45W. Worse still, the Samsung Galaxy A56, sold for 500 euros, does the same, even though the Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7 are expected to cost more than 1000 euros.
What to expect from the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7?
Beyond charging, the Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7 would still integrate some substantial new features. The Z Fold 7, in book format, should be significantly thin, measuring 4.5 mm when unfolded. In addition, many components would benefit from an update. This would be the case for the screen, the hinge, the main camera, the one located under the screen, and the internal structure. The size of the device would also be revised to approach the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition.
The Z Flip 7, for its part, would see its external screen enlarged from 3.4 to 3.6 inches. An improvement that would still place it behind the 4-inch Motorola Razr 50 Ultra. For the rest, the clamshell-format folding phone would not evolve much and would, for example, retain the photo configuration of its predecessor.
Barring any major surprises, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Z Fold 7 should once again be content with minor developments, not necessarily justifying the purchase of the latest model over the previous one. We will of course see all of this in due course at the time of the announcement and our tests. Let's hope that Samsung proves us wrong by then.
